M.E.R Manx Heritage Transport Festival 2013 Events

It’s less than a week til the Manx Heritage Transport Festival, and the Manx Electric Railway is playing it’s part with a series of events across the five days.

Wednesday 24th sees a Mail Service from Snaefell Summit to Derby Castle with M.E.R Van No.4 of 1894 in action carrying limited edition stamp covers from Laxey to Derby Castle. After the covers’s transfer from the Snaefell Mountain Railway, Van No.4 will depart Laxey attached to the 15:55 service, arriving at Derby Castle at 16:25. Covers for the above, costing £4.75 each may be purchased from Snaefell Summit on the day until 15:00 and in advance calling 01624 816302.

Friday 26th sees an Enhanced service with 12 car-sets in operation, with a 10 minute morning service to Laxey and 15 minute afternoon service.

Visits to the Laxey Substation are also available from 11:00 to 15:00, for which a direction map will be posted at Laxey station. Alternatively, ask for ‘Laxey Car Shed‘ stop (Pole 345), and the building is to your right (facing Laxey station) opposite the road underbridge. Workshop display and tours of Derby Castle Car Shed (conducted by manxelectricrailway.co.uk volunteer stewards) are available from 14:00 to 16:00, with all available rolling stock will be on display. Meet at Derby Castle booking office for the shuttle to the workshops. Pre booking for the tour is essentialm with tickets on sale at the welcome desk at the Sea Terminal on the Wednesday only, with the remainder of the tickets on sale at Derby Castle Booking Office on the Thursday and Friday morning. Tickets are priced at £5.00 per person.

A special ‘Terminus Photographic’  tour will visit every principal terminus the M.E.R. has used throughout its 120 year history. Photography opportunities include Groudle Glen (1893), Laxey (1894), Laxey (1896/7), Ballure (1898), and the sites of the Bulgham Gap stations (1967). Tour (conducted by manxelectricrailway.co.uk volunteer stewards) also includes a stop at Laxey for a discussion about the Blacksmith Siding and Laxey Station. Meet at Derby Castle 17:45 for a 18:00 Departure. Tour arrives back at Derby Castle at 22:20. Tickets are priced at £10.00 per person, available from IOMR Douglas Railway Station on the days that trains operate, or by calling 01624 673623.  Click Here for More Information.

Vintage buses including a PD2 and a Douglas Corporation bus will be on display at Derby Castle, and the Manx Classic Car Club will be displaying a range of vehicles at Laxey Station.

Sunday 28th will also see an Enhanced service, with a 15 minute morning service to Ramsey and 30 minute afternoon service.

Motorman Training Tasters will be available, driving an M.E.R Car for part of the journey on a special service between Ramsey and Lewaigue. Tickets for the above event will be available from Ramsey Station on the day. (Tickets £5.00 per person, Minimum age: 16 years)

The Manx Electric Railway Society will be hosting a ‘Food for Thought’  film show at the Laxey Pavilion, starting at 19:00. A model of Snaefell No.4 will also be on display. You are welcome to bring your own drinks. A shuttle bus will depart IOMR Douglas Railway Station at 18:10, going via Derby Castle at 18:20 and returning 21:30. Tickets £5.00 per person including food, which will be on sale at the welcome desk at the Sea Terminal from Wednesday onwards.
