Isle of Man Railways and Manx Electric Railway Online are pleased to announce a joint project to restore 1893 Trailer number 54 to operational condition.
With the restoration of Ratchet Car No.14 coming to a conclusion and the railway’s staff completing engineering works to the car, the attention of the volunteer team will now focus on the restoration of the bodywork of trailer 54. The railway’s engineering staff will carry out refurbishment works to the bogies and associated brake rigging.
Trailer 54 was last used in passenger service on 18th August 1971 when it made two return trips between Derby Castle and Laxey hauled by Car 14. It was then stored in Laxey Car Shed and later, from, 2002 until 2009 at the former Homefield Bus Garage.
Restoration will take place at the Laxey Car Shed to which the trailer has been moved. It is anticipated that restoration, to its current livery of red, white and teak, will be completed in time for the July 2019 Heritage Transport Festival.
