M.E.R. Manx Heritage Transport Festival 2015 Events


It’s just under a week until the Manx Heritage Transport Festival, and the Manx Electric Railway is playing it’s part with a series of events across the five days.

Wednesday July 29th

  • An Original Welcome – The Manx Electric Railway’s oldest tramcars, Cars No.1 and No.2 of 1893 will run in parallel between Derby Castle and Groudle. Run Departs Derby Castle 09.00 with photo stops en route, returning for 09.35.
    Tickets: All Normal fares and Go Explorer cards valid.

Manxelectricrailway.co.uk volunteer stewards will be on hand inside Car No.1 at Derby Castle from 10:00 to 16:00 to provide an information point for the M.E.R festival events.

  • A Victorian Evening – An additional extra car-set supplementing the Wednesday night evening service, using the two original M.E.R cars over three round trips to Laxey, extending to Bulgham and Dhoon Quarry for photostops on the first trip. Trips Depart Derby Castle at 17:00, 19:35 and 21:15.
    Booked Car Sets (subject to availability): Car No.1 (first trip), Car No.2, (second and third trips) with appropriate Trailer.
    Tickets: All Normal fares and Go Explorer cards valid.

Thursday July 30th

  • Intensive Service – An augmented 9 Car service will operate throughout the day between Derby Castle and Ramsey. Timetable available here.
  • The Dhoon Quarryman – A photographic tour of the railway from Derby Castle to Ramsey and return using Car 32 hauling recently restored Open Wagons 8 and 10. Photo-stops at locations of relevant interest including Dhoon and Ballajora Quarries). Departs Derby Castle 10:00, returning for 15:00 (30 minute lunch break at Ramsey).
    Booked Car Set (subject to availability): Car No.32 hauling Open Wagons No.8 and No.10.

Friday July 31st

  • Diesel Day –
    • Car No.33/Trailer No.51/Wagon No.8 in Passenger Service between Derby Castle and Laxey, working 08:55 Derby Castle to Laxey and 16:30 Laxey to Derby Castle return.
    • Car No.33 and Wagon No.8 working special trips between Derby Castle and Dhoon Quarry.
    • Shuttle Trips in operation from 10:30 til 15:00 between Laxey Car Shed and Dumbells Row, using Bord Na Mona Simplex LM344 ‘Pig’ and M.E.R Simplex 40S280.
    • Timetable/Roster available here.
      Tickets: £3.00 per person (rover, including shuttle trips), available from Derby Castle and Laxey Booking Offices on the day.
    • NATS Railcars on display at Laxey.

Update 20.07.15 – Locomotive No.34 will not be working at the Diesel Day as booked following a brake failure, however it will be on display at Dumbells Row.

  • Laxey Car Shed Tours
    Join us for a rare glimpse inside the Car Shed at Laxey. Your tour, guided by stewards from the www.manxelectricrailway.co.uk team will include behind-the-scenes views of several long withdrawn and unusual items of M.E.R. rolling stock.
    Tours start: 10:30, 11:30, 13:00, 14:00
    Meet at Laxey Station 15 minutes prior to your tour starting.Tickets:£5.00 per person on the day, available at Laxey Station.
  • Stamps on the M.E.R – A special postal service will operate between Derby Castle Station, Laxey Station and Ramsey. The first service tram from Derby Castle will include the Manx Electric Railway’s restored Mail Van No.16, for the delivery of limited edition railway letter covers cancelled with railway station postmarks. The covers will be on sale at Laxey on the Mail Van’s return from Ramsey. A special Railway Letter Service will also operate from the Summit on the Snaefell Mountain Railway to Laxey. Both these covers can be ordered in advance from Ramsey Philatelic Services, 5 Windsor Road, Ramsey. IM8 3EG or will be available on the day at the Snaefell Summit Hotel and from the Mail Van on arrival at Laxey Station. MER and SMR Covers £4.75 each.
  • Delivering the Goods – Join M.E.R historian Andrew Scarffe and the team from ManxElectricRailway.co.uk on their third Friday evening themed photography tour, this time providing an historical insight to the role the line provided in moving freight around the east of the Island. This journey marks the launch into service of the newly-restored Van No.16 for the first time in 40 years, and features the lines newest car, trailer and van all on one train! Departs Derby Castle at 18:00 to Ramsey with various stops of historical and photographic interest en-route. Returns to Derby Castle by 22:25.

Saturday August 1st

  • Manxelectricrailway.co.uk Charity Railtour ‘The Green Wrong Road’ – In support of the the Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust Appeal, for the ongoing restorations of historic Manx Electric Railway Goods rolling stock.  Update 09.06.15 Further details and tickets available HERE.
    (Please note that this event runs independently of the advertised Isle of Man Transport programme of events)

Sunday August 2nd

  • Intensive Service – An augmented 9 Car service will operate throughout the day between Derby Castle and Ramsey. Timetable available here.
  • Rare Cars on the Timetabled Service – Cars on the timetabled Service will include (subject to availability) Original Cars No.1 and No.2, and ‘Crossbench’ Cars No.16 and No.32.
  • ‘All American Day’ at Laxey – A selection of American cars from the Cunningham collection, together with American themed characters and entertainment
  • Motorman Lessons – Take a turn driving 1899-built Car No.22 for part of the journey on a special service between Laxey and Ballaragh.Further information and pricing to be confirmed.
