Timetable and Services
The last three days of operations for the Manx Electric Railway saw Timetable B in operation, with three car sets in operation. On Friday November 1st, unusual combinations were selected for use, with Car No.6/Trailer N0.51 working D1 and Car No.20/Trailer No.60 working D2. The other set in use worked from Ramsey, formed of Car No.21/Trailer No.46. The next day, Saturday November 2nd, again saw unusual combinations, with Car No.21/Trailer No.60 on D1, Car No.9/Trailer No.51 on D2 and the Ramsey-based set as Car No.6/Trailer No.46.
The official end of season, Sunday November 3rd saw more usual fare, with Car No.20/Trailer No.40 working D1 and Car No.9/Trailer No.59 working D2. Car No.6/Trailer No.46 working again as R1, however it was swapped for Car No.21 upon arrival at Derby Castle on the first trip. Car No.7/Trailer No.51 worked a private hire from Derby Castle to Laxey and return for the Narrow Gauge Railway Gathering, with the pair being the last to shunt at Laxey Station and the last to use the Blacksmiths Siding. The final journeys of the day were worked by Car No.20 northbound and Car No.21 southbound, with Car No.21 operating a last passenger trip over the station crossovers, arriving back into Derby Castle at 17:55, bringing the M.E.R 2013 season to a close.
On The Line
Phase 3 of the Laxey Station Overhaul began on the 4th of November. The entirety of Laxey station’s trackwork is being replaced from the Church Hill road crossing at the south end of the station to the north end at the A2 Road Crossing. In addition, a pair of crossovers are being installed at Dumbells Row to facilitate run-round moves.
The second piece of track renewal to take place over the November/December period was the replacement of the seaside track in the Howstrake and Lag Birragh areas, including the removal of the Lag Birragh crossover. Concrete sleepers were installed along the section, similar to those previously placed between Groudle Old Road and Groudle in Winter 2012. A gallery of the winter work undertaken is available HERE.
The second ‘Winter Photography on the M.E.R‘ event took place on the 2nd of November. This saw Car No.2 masquerading as Car No.3, a parallel run of both Cars No.1 and No.2 from Derby Castle to Groudle, and use of the Wagon and Van stock of the M.E.R for a photography session in Laxey Station. A full review of the days events is available HERE.
