An extensive refurbishment of Ballure Bridge took place over the 2014/5 Winter period – incorporating a considerable amount of work to repair the 160ft structure, originally constructed in Spring 1899 as part of the M.E.R.’s Ramsey extension opened in the same year.
Having last seen marginal maintenance work in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, and following worsening condition of the superstructure, the Manx Parliament passed the funding of £1,285,000 to overhaul the viaduct on the 21st October 2014, with plans incorporating the overhaul of the steel superstructure, replacement of all rail-carrying timbers, rails and guard rails as well as upgrading of the line from the viaduct up to (and including) the main Laxey Road crossing.
The photographs below show the chronological refurbishment of the viaduct. Please click any photograph for a larger article and full caption details.
