Manx Heritage Transport Festival 2013

The main gala week for the Manx Electric Railway, taking place from the 24th to the 28th of July, 2013.

Wednesday 24th of July

  • Special Postal Stamp service in operation from Snaefell Summit to Derby Castle, with an 1895-built Snaefell Car departing the Summit at 15:10 with the delivery of limited edition railway stamp covers, cancelled with Railway Station postmarks. Upon arrival at Laxey at 15:40, they will be transferred into 1894 built M.E.R Van No.4, which will then be attached onto the 15:55 Laxey-Derby Castle service, arriving at Derby Castle 16:25.  Covers may be purchased at the Summit until 15:00 and in advance by calling 01624 816302.

Friday 26th of July

  • Enhanced M.E.R service – 12-car set M.E.R service in operation, with a 10 minute morning service to Laxey and 15 minute afternoon service. Working timetables available at M.E.R. staffed stations on the day.
  • Workshop display and workshop tours – Derby Castle Car Shed and Workshop tours (conducted by manxelectricrailway.co.uk volunteer stewards) from 14:00 – 16:00. All available rolling stock will be on display. Meet at Derby Castle booking office for the shuttle to the workshops. Pre booking for the tour is essential. Tickets will be on sale at the welcome desk at the Sea Terminal on the Wednesday only, with the remainder of the tickets on sale at Derby Castle Booking Office on the Thursday and Friday morning.

  • Terminus Photographic Tour – Join us for a special tour visiting every principal terminus the M.E.R. has used throughout its 120 year history. Photography opportunities include Groudle Glen (1893), Laxey (1894), Laxey (1896/7), Ballure (1898), and the sites of the Bulgham Gap stations (1967). Tour (conducted by manxelectricrailway.co.uk volunteer stewards) also includes a stop at Laxey for a discussion about the Blacksmith Siding and Laxey Station.
    Meet at Derby Castle 17:45 for a 18:00 Departure. Tour arrives back at Derby Castle at 22:20.

  • 11:00-15:00 – Visits to the old and new Laxey Substations available, please see map at Laxey Station for directions to the substation, or ask for ‘Laxey Car Shed‘ stop (Pole 345). A Google Map of the location of the Laxey Substation is available HERE (Centred on the Green Arrow Marker)
  • Vintage buses including a PD2 and a Douglas Corporation bus will be on display at Derby Castle.
  • Manx Classic Car Club will be displaying a range of vehicles at Laxey Station.

Saturday 27th of July

  • Ramsey Pier Locomotive – the Planet locomotive from the Ramsey Pier Tramway will be on display at Ramsey station, on loan from the Jurby Transport Museum.

Sunday 28th of July

  • Enhanced M.E.R service – 12-car set M.E.R service in operation, with a 15 minute morning service from 09:40 til 12:10 to Ramsey and 30 minute afternoon service. Working timetables available at M.E.R. staffed stations on the day.
  • Motorman Training Taster -Take a turn driving an M.E.R Car for part of the journey on a special service between Ramsey and Lewaigue. Tickets for the above event will be available from Ramsey Station on the day.

  • Food for Thought – Join The Manx Electric Railway Society for a film show at the Laxey Pavilion, starting at 19:00. A model of Snaefell No.4 will also be on display. You are welcome to bring your own drinks. A shuttle bus will depart IOMR Douglas Railway Station at 18:10, going via Derby Castle at 18:20 and returning 21:30.
    (Tickets £5 per person including food) – Tickets will be on sale at the welcome desk at the Sea Terminal from Wednesday onwards.
