Volunteers from the Great Laxey Mine Railway have launched an appeal to raise funds towards the restoration of the former Manx Electric Railway Goods Shed at Laxey.
A unique survivor with an important future
The building is used as a base and workshop for the dedicated volunteers to carry out restoration work on the Victorian and Edwardian rolling stock of the Manx Electric Railway. However, the former goods shed itself is also of great historic importance. Built in 1903 when the railway carried a huge amount of goods and freight into the village, it is now the last surviving building of its kind in original condition on the MER. Although, overall, it is in good condition, some remedial work needs to be carried out to enable the volunteer group to continue its important work.
The home of award-winning restoration
Projects that have been restored by the M.E.R. volunteers (supported by Isle of Man Transport) include:
- Ratchet Car No.14, restored to as-new condition from a semi derelict state over a three year period – winner of the 2018 ‘Tram of the Year’ awards.
- Trailer 19 – built in 1894 and out of use since 1973, currently under full restoration to Victorian condition.
- Trailer 54 – out of use for over 50 years, fully restored to working order and winner of the 2019 ‘Tram of the Year’ awards.
- Trailer 51 of 1893 – one of the oldest vehicles on the line – fully repainted by volunteers.
- Full restoration of M.E.R. open goods wagons 8 and 10, alongside Mail Van 16 and Goods Van 11 (under restoration)
The group of volunteers includes a diverse range of people of different genders, ages and backgrounds, all of whom are dedicated to the restoration and conservation of the Island’s unique railway history.
How you can help
Funds have already been raised to replace the main windows of the Goods Shed and the trust are seeking donations and sponsorship to carry out further repairs which will include two new doors, fascia boards, gutters and downspouts, new internal wiring and a complete repaint of the exterior. The trust needs to raise £20,000 to cover the cost of the work.
