Amid large crowds of well-wishers, the Manx Electric Railway played it’s role in the London 2012 Olympics Torch Relay on Saturday 2nd June 2012, transferring the torch from Derby Castle to Laxey, utilising the lines pioneering 1893-built Car No.1 along with 1895-built Royal Saloon No.59.

The torch, having travelled along Douglas Promenade with help from Gwynne and No.44 on the Horse Tramway, and on bicycle with Tom Black, arrived at Derby Castle at 12:35 carried by Cai Benyon (member of the IoM Under 21 Hockey Squad), with the procession departing at 12:40 accompanied by television cameras to Laxey, where the torch was met by further large crowds before being taken to the Laxey Wheel and onward to Castletown.
