Rush Hour on the Railways

Easter Weekend 2019 – Friday 19th to Monday 22nd April

Four days of enthusiast tours, photographic opportunities and special events across the island’s heritage railways.


Good Friday 19th April

Timetable ‘C’ in operation alongside the following additional events.

Parallel Run

G.F. Milnes 1894 Car 9 will parallel run with the 09:40 service from Derby Castle as far as Laxey. Standard tram fares apply. Go travel cards accepted.

Motorman Taster Lessons

Try your hand at driving Manx Electric Railway Car 9 between Laxey and Lewaigue during the 125th Anniversary of Tunnel Car service. The trip includes the dramatic and scenic section of line around Bulgham Bay, 588 feet above sea level.
Participants must be aged between 21 and 75. Proof of age may be required.

Tram departs Laxey at 10:50, 12:50 and 14:50. Four participants per trip and they should arrive 45 minutes prior to departure.

Goods Wagons in service

Cars 5 and 7 will both be in service hauling open wagons 8 & 10.

Car 5 & wagon 8 will depart Derby Castle at 08:40,11:40 & 13:40. Car 7 & wagon 10 will depart Derby Castle at 10:40 & 14:10.
Standard tram fares apply. Go travel cards accepted.

M.E.R. Museum Open

The Manx Electric Railway was one of the earliest electric railways in the British Isles. There is a dedicated museum where you can learn more about the history of this pioneering railway. The museum is located inside the main depot at Derby Castle Yard.

Free admission.


Saturday 20th April

Timetable ‘C’ in operation alongside the following additional events.

‘The Works’ – Vintage Bus tour

Visiting the Bus Vannin, Steam Railway, Manx Electric Railway and Snaefell Mountain Railway workshops for a look behind the scenes at the engineering department of Isle of Man Transport.

Meet at Douglas Railway Station for 09:30. The tour will finish and return to Douglas by 16:00.

Easter Sunday 21st April

An enhanced timetable will be in operation alongside the following additional events.

M.E.R. enhanced service

An intensive service will operate all day on the Manx Electric Railway with at least eight different cars in operation. A full timetable is available in the downloadable leaflet Here.

Standard fares apply.

Stamps on the M.E.R.

A special postal service will operate between Derby Castle Station and Ramsey. Railway letter covers, cancelled with railway station postmarks, will be carried in the Manx Electric Railway’s Mail Van No.4 on the 09:10 departure from Derby Castle. After visiting Ramsey Mail Van 4 will be situated at Laxey Station and used for sorting mail. Covers can be ordered in advance from Ramsey Philatelic Service, 5 Windsor Road, Ramsey, IM8 3EG. Telephone 07624 306847 or they will be available on the day from the Mail Van on arrival at Laxey Station.

Manx Electric Railway Covers £5 each (plus 90p postage and packing if not collected).

Photography Evening at Derby Castle Yard

“Lights, Camera, Action!” at Derby Castle Yard, including specially posed vehicles, cameo scenes and a wealth of photographic opportunities. 19:00 to 21:00.
Free event. Manx Electric Railway Museum open.


Easter Monday 22nd April

Timetable ‘C’ in operation alongside the following additional events.

Derby Castle Shed Tours

An opportunity to visit the Derby Castle Yard. Each tour will include a brief history of the Derby Castle yard, a look at different types of trams, how they work and are maintained. Items of rolling stock not currently in use will be displayed in the Depot and MER artefacts will be on display. See newly refurbished horse trams on display on the depot yard. Tours limited to 10 persons per tour.

Tours start at 11:15, 12:15, 14:15, 15:15 (Please meet at the MER Museum at the Derby Castle sheds for your tour to start).
