Rush Hour on the Railways


Easter Weekend  – Friday 30th March to Monday 2nd April 2018.

Join us to celebrate the beginning of the 2018 operating season with a four day Rush Hour celebration of Isle of Man Railways.

Friday 30th March – Good Friday

MER Derby Castle Workshop Tours

Guided tours of the Derby Castle Yard workshops by the team. Each tour will include a brief history of the Derby Castle yard, a look at different types of trams and how they work and are maintained. Items of rolling stock not currently in use will be displayed in the Depot and MER artefacts will be on display.

The opportunity will be available to inspect the latest work on the comprehensive overhaul of Ratchet Car No.14. Tours are limited to 10 persons per tour.

Tours start at 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 14:15 & 15:15

M.E.R. Cars 1 & 2 – 125th Anniversary Year

Ride on Manx Electric Railway Cars 1 and 2 in their 125th anniversary year. Listed in the Guinness Book of Records, Cars 1 and 2 are the oldest electric tramcars in the world still in regular operation. Both trams will operate to a special timetable throughout the day allowing for photographic stops at scenic locations en route. Car 1 departs Derby Castle at 09:10, Car No.2 departs Derby Castle at 09:50.

Intensive 9 car Service

Witness the amazing sight of a bustling Victorian electric railway with an intensive service along the whole length of the M.E.R.. At least nine different trams will be in service.

Stamps on the Manx Electric

A special postal service will operate between Derby Castle Station and Ramsey. Railway letter covers, cancelled with railway station postmarks, will be carried in the Manx Electric Railway’s Mail Van No.4 on the 09:10 from Derby Castle. After visiting Ramsey the Mail Van will be situated at Laxey Station and used for sorting mail.

Letter Covers can be ordered in advance from Ramsey Philatelic Service, 5 Windsor Road, Ramsey, IM8 3EG (Telephone 07624 306847) or will be available on the day when Mail Van No.4 will be situated in Laxey Station siding, after 11:45. Manx Electric Railway covers are £4.75 each (plus 85p postage and packing if not collected).

Photography Evening at Derby Castle Yard

“Lights, Camera, Action!” for the third annual photography evening at Derby Castle Car Sheds, including specially posed vehicles, cameo scenes and a wealth of photographic opportunities. Illuminated tram shuttles to Far End for photographs of Douglas Bay.

19:00 to 21:00. Normal tram fares apply, M.E.R. Museum will be open.

Monday 2nd April – Easter Monday

Parallel Run

Car 19, newly repainted in 1899 “Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey Electric Tramway” livery will parallel the 09:10 service car from Laxey as far as Dhoon Glen. On the return trip, Car 19 will pause at Bulgham Bay for photographic opportunities. Car 19 departs Derby Castle for Laxey at 08:25.
Standard tram fares apply. Go travel cards accepted.

Motorman Taster Lessons

Try your hand at driving Manx Electric Railway Car 19 between Laxey and Dhoon Quarry, including the dramatic and scenic section of line around Bulgham Bay, 588 feet above sea level.
Participants must be aged between 21 and 75. Tram departs Laxey at 10:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30 and 15:30. Please report to the Laxey Stationmaster no later than twenty minutes before your booked time.
