Manx Heritage Transport Festival 2017

The main gala week for the Manx Electric Railway as part of the Manx Heritage Transport Festival, taking place from the 26th of July 2017 to the 30th.

Timetable F is in operation throughout the festival (apart from Sunday 30th, where a special intensive timetable is to be ran). Unless advertised below all fares are standard, GoTravel Cards accepted.

Wednesday July 26th

Open Car Groudle Shuttles
Matching red pairing Car No.16 and Van No.4 will run shuttles between Derby Castle and Groudle (third trip extending to Laxey) throughout the day.
Departs 10:55, 11:55, 13:00, 14:55 and 15:55 from Derby Castle.

Groudle Evening Trips
Newly repainted for 2017 Car No.6 will be in use on a special shuttle service to Groudle Glen in the evening.
Departs 18:10, 19:10, 20:10 and 21:10 from Derby Castle,
18:28, 19:28, 20:28 and 21:28 from Groudle Glen.

Snaefell Summit Dinners
Relax, raise a glass and enjoy stunning sunset views whilst you dine at the highest point on the Isle of Man.
• Trams depart from Ramsey at 17:10, arriving at Laxey 17:55 for connecting Snaefell Mountain Railway service to the Summit.
• Trams depart Derby Castle at: 17:40 and 18:40, arriving at Laxey at 18:10 and 19:10 for connecting Snaefell Mountain Railway service to the Summit.
• Returning from Laxey at: 21:25 and 22:25, arriving at Derby Castle 21:55 and 22:55.
• Returning from Laxey at 21:25, and arriving at Ramsey 22:10.

Thursday July 27th

Newly repainted stock on Timetabled Services
Car No.16 and Trailer No.60 will operate the 09:10, 10:40 and 14:10 ex Derby Castle. Car No.6 and matching Trailer will operate the 10:10 and 13:40 ex Derby Castle.

The Nationalised Navigator
“Mystery Tour” of the M.E.R using Car No.32, visiting various sidings and crossovers including the new crossover at Ballamenagh. Photo stops en route. Depart Derby Castle 10:20, returning by 17:00.

Green Hills by the Sea
Guided tour around Bulgham Bay, using green liveried Car No.21 and red liveried Trailer No.43, replicating a post 1957 ‘mixed livery’ combination.
Special tram will depart Derby Castle at 19:00 and return by 22:10. Participants must wear suitable clothing and footwear for the guided walk section.

Friday July 28th

Derby Castle Car Shed Tours
Take part in a tour of the historic Car Sheds and Workshops at Derby Castle, the home of the Manx Electric Railway for over 120 years. Your tour, guided by stewards from the team will include behind-the-scenes views showcasing the work carried out to maintain and operate the Victorian and Edwardian tramcars, as well as displays of artifacts and rarely-seen rolling stock. The opportunity will also be available to inspect the latest work on the comprehensive overhaul of ‘Ratchet’ Car No.14. Tours limited to 10 persons per tour.

Tours start at: 11:15, 12:15, 14:15, 15:15 – Meet at the Manx Electric Railway Museum (located at Derby Castle Car Sheds) 5 minutes prior to your tour starting.

Drive the Green Tram – Motorman Taster Sessions
An opportunity to try your hand at driving the Manx Electric Railways green liveried Car No.21 on one of the most scenic areas of the line between Laxey and Ballameanagh. Participants will take it in turn to use the tram controls on the steep climbs out of Laxey to Ballabeg and the air brakes on the returning descent.

Lessons start at Laxey: 10:15, 11:15, 12:40, 14:15, 15:15

Tickets: £20.00 per person, available in advance from or the Welcome Centre on 01624 662525. Two participants per trip. Participants must be aged between 21 and 75. (Proof of age maybe requested).

Stamps on the M.E.R
A special postal service will operate between Derby Castle Station, Laxey Station and Ramsey. A special Railway Letter Service will also operate from the Summit on the Snaefell Mountain Railway to Laxey. Special Commemorative Stamp Covers will be carried on both services and can be ordered in advance from Ramsey Philatelic Services, 5 Windsor Road, and Ramsey, IM8 3EG. They will be available on the day at the Snaefell Summit Hotel and from the Mail Van on arrival at Laxey Station. M.E.R and S.M.R Covers £4.75 each (plus 75p postage and packing if not collected).

M.E.R Crossbench Evening

To mark this occasion a special tram consisting of Car No.33, Trailer No.61 and Van No.4 will depart Derby Castle at 18:10. On arrival in Ramsey you will be directed to the Methodist Centre adjacent to the Station (Googlemaps link) for an illustrated talk by the Friends of Ramsey Pier recalling the remarkable history of the 131 year old structure. The special service returns from Ramsey at 21:25 (arriving at Derby Castle 22:40)

Tickets: £5.00 for the talk, standard tram fares apply for the connecting service. Go travel cards accepted.

In addition, Car No.16 and No.32 will be in operation on scheduled services.
Car No.16 and Trailer No.60 depart Derby Castle at 16:40 and 19:40.
Car No.32 and Trailer No.62 depart Derby Castle at 17:10 and 20:55.

Saturday July 29th

Original Cars No.1 and No.2 on Timetabled Service
Car No.1 departs Derby Castle at 9:10, 10:40 and 14:10.
Car No.2 departs Derby Castle at 10:10 and 13.40.

In support of the the Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust, for the ongoing restorations of historic Manx Electric Railway Goods rolling stock and Ratchet Car No.14.
(Please note that this event runs independently of the advertised Isle of Man Transport programme of events)

Sunday July 30th

Intensive Service
An intensive service will operate throughout the day between Derby Castle and Ramsey. Timetable to be supplied nearer to event.

Slide Show and Social Evening

Conclude our festival with a trip down to Port Erin on a vintage bus, for a social evening and slide show at the Falcons Nest Hotel. The presentation will include previously unseen black and white pictures of the Islands railways from 1953 with Andrew Scarffe and Mike Buttell. The Falcons Nest boasts a fine selection of real ales. Admission £3 on the door or £7:50 to include return travel by Vintage Bus, departing Douglas 19:00.
