Manx Heritage Transport Festival – Wednesday 25th July to Sunday 29th July 2018

Join us to celebrate a variety of Manx Transport Heritage with five days of events.


Wednesday 25th July

Timetable ‘F’ in operation with additional events as below.

Parallel Run

Ride on Manx Electric Railway Cars 1 and 2 in their 125th anniversary year. Listed in the Guinness Book of Records, Cars 1 and 2 are the oldest electric tramcars in the world still in regular operation. Car 1 and Car 2 (with trailer 51) will run in parallel between Derby Castle and Laxey.

Depart Derby Castle at 09:10, arrive Laxey 09:40.

Car 2 and Trailer 51 will remain in service throughout the day, departing Derby Castle at 10:40 and 14:10.
Standard fares apply. Go travel cards accepted.

Unusual Tram and Trailer Combinations

Open Car 32 and Trailer 48 will depart Derby Castle at 9:40, 12:40 and 16:10.
Open Car 33 and Trailer 60 will depart Derby Castle at 10:10 and 13:40.

Motorman Taster lessons

Try your hand at driving one of the oldest operating electric tramcars in the world! Take the controls of M.E.R. Car 1 between Laxey and Ballameanagh. Participants must be aged between 21 and 75.

Tram departs Laxey at 10:15, 11:15, 12:40, 14:15 and 15:15. Please report to the Laxey Stationmaster no later than twenty minutes before your booked time. Two participants per trip. (Please note numbers are limited so booking is recommended).

Edwardian Photography Tour

An afternoon tour between Derby Castle and Ramsey, stopping en route at scenic locations for photographic opportunities. Using Winter Saloon Car 19 recently re-painted in 1899 “Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey Electric Tramway” livery and refurbished trailer 42, returned to service this season after an absence of ten years.

Departs Derby Castle 13:50 returning to Derby Castle at 18:00.

Friday 27th July

Car 21 and Trailer 62 will depart Derby Castle at 15:40 and 18:40

Derby Castle Depot workshop tours

An opportunity to see “behind the scenes” at Derby Castle Depot and Yard. Each tour will include a brief history of the depot, a look at different types of trams, how they work and are maintained. Items of rolling stock not currently in use will be displayed inside the depot and MER artefacts will be on display. Tours limited to 10 persons per
tour and start at the Manx Electric Railway Museum at Derby Castle Depot.

Stamps on the M.E.R.

A special postal service will operate between Derby Castle Station and Ramsey. Railway letter covers, cancelled with railway station postmarks, will be carried in the Manx Electric Railway’s Mail Van No.4 on the 08:40 from Derby Castle. Depart Ramsey 10:10 and on arrival at Laxey at 10.55, the Mail Van will be situated at Laxey Station Siding and used for sorting mail.

Special covers for both these services can be ordered in advance from Ramsey Philatelic Services, 5 Windsor Road, Ramsey, IM8 3EG (plus 85p postage & packing) or will be available on the day from the Mail Van in Laxey Station siding. M.E.R. Covers are £4.75 each.

Enhanced evening service

Car 6, Trailer 43 and Mail van 16 in use on additional evening services.
Departing  Derby Castle at 18:10 and 20:20, returning from Dhoon Quarry at 19:20 and 21:20.

Saturday 28th July

Sunday 29th July

Intensive service on the M.E.R.

An intensive service with as many vehicles from the M.E.R.’s historic fleet in use as possible. Full timetable details available closer to the event.

Illustrated Talk and Social Evening

Conclude our festival with an illustrated talk in The Tickethall. The presentation will focus on the end of the Peel and Ramsey lines with Mike Buttell and an update from Andrew Scarffe on the final stages of MER Ratchet Car 14. 20:00 – 22:00. Admission £3 on the door
