Summer 2010 Fleet Update

'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' - Car No's. 7, 28 and 27 in Laxey Car Sheds, July 2010

Motor Cars

  • 1893-built Car No.1 is now stored servicable requiring repairs to a traction motor – her rostered duties over the Heritage Transport Festival were fulfilled by car No.2
  • No changes for Car’s 5 and 6 – both remain in regular active service, although No.5’s current paintwork is beginning to look shabby after 10 years in regular service.
  • Car No.7 is reaching the end of it’s contracted overhaul and has returned to M.E.R metals in Laxey Car Sheds, where it is being painted into a similar ‘Blue’ livery that Car No.2 carried from 2002 until 2005. This car will unfortunately lose it’s ‘tunnel car’ seating, gaining 2×1 seats and a partition, similar to No.5.
  • All the Crossbench cars stored until recently at Homefield bus depot (No’s 14, 15, 17, 28 and 29), as well as Locomotive No.23 and freight Car No.26, have returned to the M.E.R and are stored at various places along the line.
  • Car No.20 has now returned to active service following an overhaul, although she suffered some teething problems throughout May, June and July. This car last worked in 2007.
  • With Car No.20 returning to service, Car No.22 has been stopped for a well-earned repaint. It is understood that this car will be appearing in a ‘traditional’ livery.
  • Car No.26 is now ‘stored serviceable’ at Derby Castle unfortunately still suffering from 2008s ‘UAT’ axle testing. No.26 worked one Douglas – Laxey special in 2009, but is very unlikely to appear in 2010.
  • With a shortage of other cars, Cars No.32 and 33 have seen an amazing increase in use, with No.33 being employed solely on the ‘Ultimate Driving Experiences’ between Laxey and Ramsey.

Trailers and Freight Vehicles

Trailer No.57, although seeing unprecidented amounts of use at the beginning of the season due to a lack of servicable trailers, derailed at Derby Castle on June 2nd, with the Douglas end truck swinging through 90 degrees. No.57 is now undergoing remedial work inside Derby Castle Car Sheds.
